Is Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort Worth It? My Honest Review

If you’ve been looking at Universal Orlando resorts, chances are Cabana Bay has popped up a lot. It’s colorful, it’s affordable, and it looks fun—but is it actually worth staying there?

I’ve stayed here twice now and here’s my honest take…

First Impressions: This Place Has a Personality

The second you pull in, Cabana Bay feels different from other hotels. It’s bold, bright, and fully committed to its retro 1950s–60s theme.

And honestly? It works.

Instead of feeling dated, it feels intentional—like you’ve stepped into a vintage beach resort. The music, the colors, the signage… it all adds to the experience.

My take: If you love a themed stay, this is a huge win. If you prefer modern/luxury vibes, this may not be your style.

Rooms: Surprisingly Functional for Families

This is where Cabana Bay really shines—especially for families.

Family Suites

-Separate sleeping/living area (huge for kids)
-Sliding door for privacy
-Kitchenette (mini fridge, microwave, sink)
-Plenty of storage

After a long park day, having space to spread out instead of everyone crammed into one room is a game changer. It can sleep up to six with two queen beds and a pull-out sofa.

Standard Rooms

More basic, but still clean, comfortable, and on theme.

My take: Not luxury—but incredibly practical. For the price, the family suites are one of the best values on Universal property. The standard rooms have plenty of space for a family of four, and the beds are comfortable.

Pools & Amenities: This Is Where It Overdelivers

Cabana Bay doesn’t just have a pool—it has multiple experiences.

What stood out most:

Lazy River – Easily one of the best parts of the resort. It’s relaxing, fun, and something you don’t typically get at this price point. You can either bring your own inter tube or buy one at the resort.

Pools + Waterslide – Great for kids and still fun for adults.

Poolside Movies – A really fun way to wind down at night.

Fire Pits – Underrated but such a cozy touch.

Cabanas - You can reserve these poolside cabanas in advance or day of at Atomic Tonic. They hold up to six people and come with an armoire, table with four chairs, two cushioned lounge chairs, a refrigerator, and a personal safe.

My take: This is where Cabana Bay feels like more than a “budget” resort. You could easily spend a full non-park day here and not feel like you’re missing out.

Things to Do: More Than You Expect

Galaxy Bowl – A retro bowling alley inside the hotel (super fun and very on theme). Be sure to make reservations. They fill up fast, especially during popular times of the year!
Arcade – Great for downtime.
Fitness Center – Nice if you want a good sweat session away from the parks.

My take: This resort is ideal if you want built-in entertainment without leaving the property.

Dining: Convenient, Not Fancy

Dining here is all about ease and variety.

Bayliner Diner – Food court-style with lots of options
Starbucks – A must for early mornings
Pool Bars – Great for a mid-day or evening drink

My take: It’s not a foodie destination, but it’s reliable, quick, and works well for families. Also, Bayliner Diner stays open late. This is perfect for a before bedtime snack after a long park day. Craving something sweet, no worries, try Shakes Malt Shoppe. It’s delicious! Rather end the night with a nightcap, head over Swizzle Lounge in the hotel lobby.

Location & Perks: A Big Plus

Cabana Bay has some really solid perks for the price:

Early Park Admission to Universal parks
Free transportation (buses run consistently)
Walking access to Volcano Bay

Important note: Cabana Bay does not include Express Pass (only select Signature Collection resorts do), so that’s something to factor into your decision.

My take: The early entry is a huge advantage if you plan to hit popular rides early. Also, the dedicated walking path to Volcano Bay is worth it alone if you are planning on going to the water park one day! You can head in early and enjoy lower wait times before the park gets too busy on hot summer days.

The Downsides (Because There Are a Few)

To keep it real, here are a few things to consider:

-It’s a large resort, so you may have a bit of a walk depending on your room location
-It can feel busy, especially during peak times (I’m talking to you Bayliner Diner!) and when there are school groups visiting
-Rooms are more value-focused than luxurious
-No included Express Pass

My take: None of these are dealbreakers—but they’re good to know going in.

Final Verdict: Is It Worth It?

Yes—for the right traveler.

Cabana Bay is perfect if you:
-Want a fun, themed resort experience
-Are traveling with kids and need space
-Love having activities at your hotel
-Want to stay on-site without paying $$$$

It might not be the best fit if you:
-Want a quiet, upscale, luxury stay
-Prioritize Express Pass over everything else

Final Thoughts

Cabana Bay is one of those resorts that just feels fun. It doesn’t try to be luxury—and it doesn’t need to be. It leans into its theme, gives you more than you expect for the price, and makes your Universal trip feel like a full vacation, not just a place to sleep.
