Jiko at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge: Our Favorites + Why It’s Worth Leaving the Parks For
Some of my favorite meals at Walt Disney World aren’t actually inside the parks, and Jiko – The Cooking Place is easily one of them.
Located inside Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, Jiko is a signature dining restaurant inspired by the flavors and cuisines of Africa. Between the food, the atmosphere, the South African wine selection, and the opportunity to spend some time exploring Animal Kingdom Lodge, this is one of those reservations that can become an entire evening instead of just another dinner.
And while Jiko may feel a little more upscale than your typical Disney restaurant, we absolutely bring our kids. In fact, there are several things about Jiko that they love too.
If you’re considering Jiko for your next Walt Disney World vacation, here’s what we love, what we order, and a few of my planning tips for making the most of your reservation.
Jiko Menu
First, What Is Jiko – The Cooking Place?
Jiko is located at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and is considered one of Walt Disney World’s signature dining restaurants.
The menu takes inspiration from different regions of Africa and combines those flavors with a more elevated dining experience. You’ll find unique appetizers, steaks and other entrées, plus an impressive selection of South African wines.
One of the reasons I love Jiko is that it feels completely different from eating inside a theme park.
It’s a chance to slow down.
After spending the day walking through the parks, waiting in lines, riding attractions, and trying to fit everything in, sitting down at Animal Kingdom Lodge for a really good dinner is such a nice change of pace.
And because Animal Kingdom Lodge itself is worth visiting, I always recommend building a little extra time around your reservation.
Giraffe Bread
The Giraffe Bread
We have to start with the bread.
The Giraffe Bread comes with your meal, and it’s one of those little things we look forward to every time we eat at Jiko.
You don’t have to order it separately—it’s part of the experience when you sit down for dinner.
It may seem funny to include bread on a list of favorites at a signature restaurant, but if you know, you know. Sometimes it’s the simplest things you remember from a Disney meal, and this is one of them for us.
Roasted Tomato Soup
Roasted Tomato Soup
The Roasted Tomato Soup is another favorite.
I love starting a meal with something comforting and familiar, especially when I know I’m going to be a little more adventurous with some of the other dishes.
It’s also a great example of what I like about Jiko. You don’t have to be an adventurous eater to enjoy dinner here. There are plenty of familiar options alongside dishes that give you an opportunity to try something completely different.
Wild Boar Tenderloin
Braai’d Wild Boar Tenderloin
Speaking of trying something different, the Braai’d Wild Boar Tenderloin is one I recommend.
Wild boar probably isn’t something most of us are ordering on a normal weeknight at home, which is exactly why I think Jiko is such a fun place to try it.
If you’re looking at the menu and thinking, “I don’t know if I would order that,” this might be your sign to give it a try.
One of my favorite things about traveling is getting the chance to try foods and flavors that I wouldn’t normally choose at home, and Disney dining can be a great opportunity to do that too.
Short Rib
Short Rib Isitambu
The Short Rib Isitambu is another entrée we love and one I would absolutely order again.
It’s rich, flavorful, and exactly the kind of entrée I want when I’m sitting down for a slower dinner after a busy Disney day.
When I’m helping clients choose Disney restaurants, I always encourage them to think beyond simply asking, “What are the most popular restaurants?”
Instead, think about what your family actually likes to eat and what kind of experience you want.
Jiko is a great choice when you want a meal that feels special without having to leave Walt Disney World property.
Bone Marrow-crusted Filet
From the Oak Grill
If you’re more of a steak person, Jiko has you covered.
We love the steak From the Oak Grill, and this is a great option if you want the Jiko experience but would rather stick with something a little more familiar.
Pair it with the Four Cheese Macaroni and you have the kind of dinner I’m still thinking about after the vacation is over.
If someone in your family sees “African-inspired restaurant” and immediately worries that there won’t be anything they’ll eat, this is one of the reasons I tell them to take another look at the menu.
Jiko has plenty of interesting flavors, but that doesn’t mean every dish is completely outside your comfort zone.
Kid Steak
Yes, We Bring Our Kids to Jiko
This is something I think is important to mention because “signature dining” can sometimes make parents assume a restaurant isn’t meant for families.
It’s still Disney.
We bring our kids to Jiko, and there are things here that they genuinely look forward to.
One of their favorites is the Steak Sosatie, which is a great choice for kids who already love steak and want something familiar.
Pumbaa’s Dessert Grub
Then there’s Pumbaa’s Dessert Grub.
Disney knows how to make dessert fun for kids, and this is definitely one of those experiences.
Paint-Your-Own Ostrich Egg
But one of the things my kids really enjoy is getting to paint their own ostrich egg.
It gives them something fun and different to do at the table while we’re enjoying dinner, and those little details are part of what makes Disney dining different from simply going out to eat.
Of course, you know your kids best. If your kids are completely exhausted after a park day and ready for bed by 7:00, a long signature dinner might not be the best choice that night.
That’s why I think where you put a restaurant like Jiko into your itinerary matters just as much as making the reservation itself.
Wine Selection
Don’t Skip the South African Wine
If you enjoy wine, this is another big reason to put Jiko on your list.
Jiko has an amazing selection of South African wines, and I love that it gives you the opportunity to try something you may not normally order at home.
You also don’t need to be a wine expert.
Ask your server for a recommendation.
Tell them what you typically enjoy or what you’re ordering for dinner and let them help you choose something that pairs well with your meal.
For me, this is part of what makes Jiko feel like a true dinner experience rather than simply another restaurant reservation.
Jiko
Make Your Jiko Reservation in Advance
If Jiko is high on your Disney dining wish list, this is not a reservation I would purposely leave until you arrive.
Walt Disney World dining reservations open up 60 days in advance, and I recommend making your priority dining reservations as early as you can—especially if you have a specific night or dining time in mind.
This is also where having an overall Disney plan becomes important.
Before making dining reservations, I like to think about things such as:
Which park will you be visiting that day?
How tired will everyone be?
Are you staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge or traveling there from another resort?
Will you have your own car, use Disney transportation, or use a rideshare?
Do you want to go back to the parks afterward?
Would you rather make Jiko the main event for the evening?
A great restaurant reservation at the wrong time can make a Disney day feel stressful. The same reservation placed strategically in your itinerary can become one of your favorite nights of the trip.

Is Jiko Worth Leaving the Parks For?
For us, absolutely.
I know it can be hard to convince yourself to leave a park when you’ve paid for park tickets and there’s still so much you could be doing.
But I also think some of the best Disney vacations happen when you stop trying to squeeze an attraction into every available minute.
Jiko gives us a chance to slow down, enjoy a really good meal, try something different, have a glass of South African wine, and spend an evening enjoying Animal Kingdom Lodge.
And that’s part of the vacation too.

Should You Add Jiko to Your Disney Dining List?
I would especially recommend Jiko if you:
Want a special dinner during your Walt Disney World vacation
Enjoy steak, short rib, or trying more adventurous dishes
Appreciate a great wine selection
Want to explore Animal Kingdom Lodge
Are celebrating something special
Want a slower evening away from the parks
Are looking for a signature dining experience that can still work with kids
For our family, Jiko checks so many boxes.
We get the Giraffe Bread we look forward to, I can order favorites like the Braai’d Wild Boar Tenderloin, steak From the Oak Grill or Short Rib Isitambu, the kids have options they actually enjoy, and we can try a South African wine while slowing down for the evening.
That’s why Jiko continues to be one of my favorite dinners at Walt Disney World.

One Last Disney Planning Tip
When you’re planning a Disney vacation, don’t choose your restaurants in isolation.
Your dining reservations should work with the rest of your itinerary—not against it.
Where you’re staying, which parks you’re visiting, transportation, your kids’ normal schedules, how many park days you have, and what experiences are most important to your family all play a role in deciding where and when you should eat.
It’s one of the reasons I love helping families plan Walt Disney World vacations.
There are so many little decisions that go into a Disney trip, and you shouldn’t have to figure every one of them out on your own.
If you’re planning a Walt Disney World vacation and want help deciding where to stay, how to structure your park days, which dining reservations make sense for your family, and when you need to make those reservations, I’d love to help you plan it.
Because sometimes one of your favorite Disney memories ends up being the night you left the parks early and went to dinner.
